Name: Sirius Black
Age: 36 (he didn't age while he was in the veil)
Physical Appearance: He has gray eyes and black hair that is usually long if he’s not doing too well and kept short when things are going okay. He has put on some weight since Azkaban but is still thin. As much as he regrets it, he is a part of the Black family, and inherited their natural, aristocratic good looks.
Religion: Agnostic. Sirius prefers to live in the moment, so he hasn’t given it much thought.
Education: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry alumnus
Occupation: None. Sirius trained to be an Auror with James after leaving Hogwarts, but he never completed his training.
Significant Other: Sirius has been in a relationship with Remus Lupin since they graduated, one that they slowly returned to after his escape from Azkaban.
Character Biography:
History: Sirius Black was born November 17th, 1960 to a very rich, very proud family. His parents were not close, and his mother hired a French nanny to care for Sirius while he was young. Growing up, he knew that his parents were cold and self-absorbed, but it wasn’t until he went to Hogwarts that he decided to completely abandon their values. Sirius was the first Black to be sorted into Gryffindor, something that he learned to be very thankful for. During his first year at Hogwarts he became close with the other first year Gryffindor boys - James Potter, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew. Slowly, Sirius’ eyes were opened to just how narrow-minded his family was. Regulus, Sirius’ younger brother, became a first year Slytherin when Sirius turned thirteen, and though they had shared a common fear of their parents as boys, they grew apart as Regulus sided with the other rich purebloods.
Sirius’ sixth year was a year of change. After a months of seemingly useless flirtation, his feelings for Remus - a confusing obsession that he had been harboring for past two years - became too much, and he made a move. Surprisingly, the feelings were mutual; they began a relationship. The Marauders created their infamous map. James, Sirius, and Peter became Animagi so they could keep Remus company during full moons. Over winter break, Sirius left 12 Grimmauld Place for good, seeking amnesty at James’ house. In a moment of poor judgment, Severus Snape managed to push Sirius into hinting that the Whomping Willow had something to do with where Remus went every month. Chaos ensued, ending with James saving Severus’ life while Sirius watched helplessly, but not before Severus discovered Remus’ secret. Remus was understandably angry at Sirius, who spent the next few months sulking, drinking recklessly and ditching classes. Eventually the two made up, but the incident taught Sirius to think before he speaks.
After inheriting a large sum of money from his Uncle Alphard before the summer of seventh year, Sirius rented a small flat in London, just large enough for the four Marauders and a few bottles of firewhiskey. When he graduated, he entered the training program for Aurors with James and Remus moved into his flat. James and Lily married immediately after graduating, the arrival of Harry making Sirius a godfather before he turned twenty. Underneath the celebrations, the first war was brewing. Dumbledore saw the need for a resistance movement and invited the five friends to join. Suspicions grew; tensions rose. Remus was gone one morning when Sirius awoke, having left without a word. Lily and James went into hiding, using Peter as their Secret-Keeper at Sirius’ suggestion. Lord Voldemort fell on October 31st, 1981, but not before using information from Peter to murder Lily and James Potter. Sirius, mad with grief and the extreme betrayal of trust, hunted Peter, confronting him in the middle of a Muggle neighborhood. Peter framed Sirius, transformed, and Sirius was sent to Azkaban without a trial.
Sirius barely avoided going insane. Twelve years in Azkaban would be enough to break most people, and Sirius had also endured the losses of Lily and James. He would change into Padfoot when he sensed the Dementors coming near, slipping into the dog’s slow, simple mindset. When Cornelius Fudge visited to inspect the prison, Sirius asked for his copy of the Daily Prophet. In a picture of the Weasley family, Sirius spotted a rat missing a finger: Peter Pettigrew. The article stated that Ron, the boy whose shoulder Peter was sitting on, would be returning to Hogwarts in the fall. Hogwarts, where Harry was. Sirius immediately began planning his escape. He would not let Peter get Harry too. As a dog, Sirius was skinny enough to slip through the bars when the Dementors were preoccupied; he swam to shore and headed for the school. While there, he attempted to get to Peter many times - once he even broke into the school and snuck into the Gyffindor common room - but he wasn’t successful until he, in Animagus form, dragged Ron and Peter under the Whomping Willow and into the Shrieking Shack.
Harry and Hermione tried to fight Sirius, obviously ignorant of the truth, but they were stopped by Remus, who had been teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts. Remus had seen Sirius’ and Peter’s names on the Marauder’s Map and guessed the truth, though he needed Sirius’ confirmation. That night, Peter escaped, but five more people knew the truth and were willing to help Sirius. Harry and Hermione, acting on hints from Dumbledore, saved Buckbeak the hippogriff and led the animal to Sirius as a way for him to escape the Dementors that waited to give him the Kiss. He flew anywhere that the animal wanted to take him - anywhere outside of the wizarding world. Letters from Dumbledore kept him updated.
In Harry’s fourth year at Hogwarts, Sirius became concerned with the boy’s participation in the Tri-Wizard Tournament, and so he returned to Hogsmeade just in case. Dumbledore formed a new Order of the Phoenix the next year, using Sirius’ childhood home, 12 Grimmauld Place, as headquarters, forcing Sirius to return there. The house held many memories that Sirius had tried to forget, not to mention the loud, permanent portrait of his mother. Even with Remus to watch over him and help him ready the place for the Order, Sirius became even more depressed. He was able to see Harry for a few weeks in the summer, but of course the boy had to return to school, and with Remus constantly on missions for the Order, Sirius was left alone the majority of the time.
When a chance came to help, Sirius took it. During the battle at the Department of Mysteries, Sirius was knocked through a veiled arch by a curse from his cousin, Bellatrix. He was assumed dead, as the veil had been used as a way to execute prisoners in earlier days, but the veil had been created to only kill those who had committed serious crimes. After a period of unconsciousness, Sirius awoke next to the arch. It was night; no one was in the department. After finding his way out, Sirius returned to Grimmauld Place, but the privacy charms had been altered and the house wouldn’t show itself. Not knowing where to go or how to contact anyone, Sirius decided that he had had enough. There was nothing he could do for the Order; it was obvious that he couldn’t aid the cause any longer. As Padfoot he made a final trip to Diagon Alley and owled Gringotts, taking enough money from Remus’ vault to buy a plane ticket to North America. The cheapest arrival destination was a small airport in Canada. He sent Remus a letter explaining the situation and where he was going, with an IOU for the money. He didn’t ask Remus to follow him - he didn’t know if Remus had a job or anything holding him down - just gave the name of the airport and told him that he would probably be looking for somewhere to stay in that area.
Having made the trip without anyone realizing his identity (he transfigured a newspaper into a passport and fake ID), Sirius purchased a small house in Alternaville, Canada. He hasn’t heard back from Remus yet, but hopes to at least receive a letter from him soon. So far, he hasn’t met any of the townspeople, and he rather hopes that he won’t have to. All Sirius wants to do now is relax and figure out how to live as a muggle.
Personality: Sirius lives up to his name - he burns bright and fast. As a teenager, he was careless, rash, and energetic, but learned to think about the consequences of his actions beforehand. He was born with a general disregard for rules, a characteristic that only intensified when he left his family and was on his own. He slips into periods of bitterness and anger occasionally, especially if alcohol is involved, but he tries to let the past be the past and stay strong, or at least seem so.
Personality in seven words or less: Intense, sporadic, loyal, curious, bright, fierce.
How Others Perceive Your Character: Those who know Sirius’ family may think him stuck up or elitist, but he has long since separated himself from the other Blacks. Most of the wizarding world believes that he is guilty of multiple murders and is completely insane. Anyone willing to give him a chance would see his intense loyalty and dedication, but not many are willing to look twice.
Beliefs, Convictions, Morals: Loyalty is the most important quality in Sirius’ opinion. One must be prepared to do anything in order to protect one’s friends. Sirius doesn’t believe in family responsibilities or attachments; just because one is born into a certain group of people does not mean that one must stay with them.
Reason for Escaping to Canada: He is tired of the wizarding world, always having to hide, not being able to step outside for fear of being seen. There is nothing more that he can do for the Order, Harry, or anyone else. Now that they all think him dead, well, it might be better to just keep it that way.
Their DHAs [Dreams, Hopes, and Aspirations] for Canada: Sirius chose Canada because it was cheap and overseas; hopefully people there won’t be familiar with his mug shot. Also, he hopes that Remus will join him, but he doesn’t want to pressure the man into leaving everything he has now for Sirius.
Twenty-Questions for the Characters:
1. What turns them on: Remus.
2. What turns them off: Girls who wear too much perfume, or try too hard to look good, or girls in general, usually.
3. Would they see a shrink: No. I doubt that they could do anything for me, really. I’m not exactly the typical basket case.
4. Worst Childhood experience: My entire experience at Grimmauld was horrible. I suppose the night I left was the worst. I’d prefer not to talk about it.
5. Favorite Film: I saw a couple of movies the summer I stayed at James’, but they’re a muggle thing. I don’t really remember them and I certainly couldn’t tell you their titles.
6. Favorite Song: It depends on my mood. I loved Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” for obvious reasons, and some songs have memories attached to them, like “Across the Universe” by the Beatles. I wore down five copies of Led Zeppelin’s fourth album.
7. Favorite Word: I always liked “abscond.” Couldn’t tell you why.
8. Least Favorite Word: “Mudblood.”
9. Favorite Curse Word: I don’t discriminate. The more, the better.
10. Best gift ever received: Forgiveness.
11. Sound or Noise they hate: Birds chirping early in the morning. They make it bloody impossible to sleep.
12. Sound or Noise they love: Bare feet on wood or tile.
13. Do they know the answer to 64 million dollar question: I’d have to know the question first, yeah?
14. [Complete the sentence] ... All the world's a stage... “and all the men and women merely players.” One of my favorite quotations out of all the rubbish we had to read in school. Best thing to come out of Muggle Studies, anyway.
15. Did Yoko Ono really break up the Fab Four: I used to think she did, but, really, with or without her, nothing lasts forever, not even friendship.
16. Chuck Norris or Bruce Lee: Who?
17. Half full or half empty: They both mean the same thing.
18. Coke or Pepsi: I just stick to firewhiskey and tea, thanks. Soft drinks are too sweet for me.
19. If they were a Jellybean flavor, which one: Vomit. They look harmless.
20. and, finally, if Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? That James and Lily made it up there. Hell, if I’m good enough, they would have been.
It's been a long time since I rock-and-rolled.
It's been a long time since I did the stroll.
Let me get it back, let me get it back, let me get it back
mm-baby, where I come from.
It's been a long time, been a long time,
Been a long, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time.
Yes, it has.
It's been a long time since the book of love.
I can't count the tears of a life with no love.
A-carry me back, carry me back, carry me back,
mm-baby, where I come from,
It's been a long time, been a long time,
Been a long, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time.
It seems so long since we walked in the moonlight,
a-makin' vows that just couldn't work right.
Yeah, open your arms, open your arms, open your arms.
Baby, let my love come running in, a-yeah.
It's been a long time, been a long time,
Been a long, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time.
